Why Leaders Won't Share: The Implications for Leadership Development Continuity
Generation Y will double in size over the next seven to eight years while the boomer cohort will shrink by fifty percent to just short of twenty percent of the workforce. Generation X, the cohort literally sandwiched between Boomers and Generation Y, is one-third the size of the Boomer cohort today and, by 2020 will only be one-third the size of Generation Y. This means that the majority of future leaders will be one generation removed from the Boomers and, therefore, will not have developed the leadership skills and knowledge, or gained the experience, required to lead their organizations. This article summarizes the feedback from one hundred business leaders on what is required to engage current senior leaders in the process of skills and knowledge transfer to future leaders. Without this engagement, organizations may find themselves without the leadership required for future business growth.
